Grand Opening Event – April 9  – Starts at 11am (Museum opens at 10:30am)

Don’t miss the grand opening of our new Issac Hayes: Black Moses Gives Back exhibit. Experience the new exhibit and enjoy feature musical entertainment from Ekpe Abioto at 11:15 am, the musical philanthropist and founder of the Memphis African Jazz Ensemble who had the honor of performing at the funeral of Isaac Hayes. The exhibition curator will be present to answer questions beginning at 11 am.  Enjoy activity stations that take a closer look at traditional African textiles and you can make your own Kufi hat. Storytime with the Memphis Library will begin at 12pm.

MoSH, in partnership with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, is proud to announce the opening of Black Moses Gives Back, a fun and colorful exhibit which shows audiences a unique collection of dashikis worn by the late soul singer, Isaac Hayes. Best remembered for his Stax songs of the 1970s, such as the theme from Shaft, Hayes also was known for his interest in black pride and Afrocentrism. Beyond displaying the African clothing worn by Hayes, this exhibit will highlight Hayes’s philanthropic efforts in the African nation of Ghana and also his hometown of Memphis. It is a fitting moment for the opening of this exhibit as this year’s International Memphis in May festival is honoring Ghana. Black Moses Gives Back will highlight the culture of Ghana and its people, as well as an important chapter in the life of one of Memphis’s most prominent citizens. LEARN MORE
