Set in 1970 at the hazy end of the psychedelic ’60s, Inherent Vice follows Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), a pot-smoking private investigator whose latest case turns personal. When his former girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston) appears asking for help, Doc is drawn into the disappearance of her lover Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts), a powerful real-estate mogul with enemies on every side. As Doc stumbles through a surreal Los Angeles of surfers, stoners, cops, and conspiracies, he crosses paths with hard-nosed detective “Bigfoot” Bjornsen (Josh Brolin), eccentric allies, and a shadowy organization known as the Golden Fang. Equal parts mystery, comedy, and fever dream, the film plunges Doc into a labyrinth where nothing is quite what it seems.
