Ready to uncover how a prehistoric ocean shaped the land we know today? Discover a vast prairie ecosystem visible from space and explore the powerful geologic forces that formed it, the ecosystems it supports, the people it has shaped, and the stories rooted in its rare black soil in Landshaping: The Origins of the Black Belt Prairie.

The Exhibition Experience
“Landshaping: The Origins of the Black Belt Prairie” examines the geology and history of the black belt prairie. In this exhibition, visitors will learn about the geologic event collectively known as the Mississippi Embayment and its effect on this region’s natural and human history. Fossils and farm tools will be displayed alongside photographs by Houston Cofield, a Memphis-based photographer. Cofield’s images of farms, prairies, and individuals highlight the beauty and biodiversity of the Black Belt prairie. This work will integrate various elements of Cofield’s ongoing interdisciplinary practice as an artist with a strong personal connection to the American South.
