Headline: Eat, drink and even learn a little at the Museum of Science & History’s Science of Wine event
The Science of Wine is back Friday, Sept. 9, for its seventh festival at the Pink Palace, part of the Museum of Science & History (MoSH).
Think of it like a smaller-scale wine and food festival where you eat and drink and, if you want, learn; the educational component is up to you. The motto is “wine and food pairings with a side of science.”

Uncork your inner sommelier — and your inner scientist. The Museum of Science & History (MoSH) will host the seventh annual The Science of Wine event on Sept. 9.
This is not your normal wine tasting. Yes, you will get to taste some amazing wines — around 40 to 50 will be poured. But this event is being put on by the education department of MoSH (formerly the Pink Palace), and they couldn’t help but turn it into a fun — and educational — night.
“The Science of Wine is truly a party for your palate,” says John Mullikin, education instructor for MoSH. “Fans of science, wine and the Memphis food scene will all experience something new, from discovering new varietals to learning about the wine-making process to finding a new favorite chef.”

First up, MoSH is looking for someone to wine and dine. If you have questions about wine, MoSH is your guy — acidity, fermentation, yeast, carbon dioxide, alcohol, sugar, and tannins — he knows it all. Is he a know-it-all? Maybe. But does he know which foods from local restaurants pair best with certain foods? Of course, and he’ll tell you why in a series of lectures and other fun wine-related activities this weekend. And if you give MoSH a rose, you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass in return.

Of course, Memphis is a live music mecca. No trip would be fully executed without taking in at least one show. The concert that caught my eye was a first of its kind, and I was extremely excited to experience it. The Memphis Museum of Science and History (MoSH) played host to a beer release event that honored their treasured mastodon skeleton. Crosstown Brewing Company made a special double IPA in honor of the huge creature, and the Lucky 7 Brass Band played a live show in the museum’s planetarium accompanied by a custom laser light show. Beer, brass, bones… could you ask for more?!

“Vertigo” at the Memphis Museum of Science and History, Saturday:
Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’ will screen at the Memphis Museum of Science and History on Aug. 13. (Courtesy MoSH)
Last week, in recommending a screening of the David Lynch film “Mulholland Drive,” I mentioned the once-a-decade film poll by the British magazine “Sight & Sound,” the latest version of which is coming out in November. “Mulholland Drive” was the highest-ranking 21st century film in the 2012 poll, but big news then was the elevation of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 noir “Vertigo” to No. 1, breaking the 50-year reign of “Citizen Kane.” To be honest, “Vertigo” isn’t my favorite Hitchcock (that’d be “Rear Window”), but it’s probably his most obsessive and commanding film, an absolute must-see for anybody who cares about the medium. And this week offers a rare chance to see it on a big — likely really big — screen, MoSH’s Giant Screen theater, with an intro from local filmmaker and film professor Steven Ross. Alicia Davidson has more here. 5:30 p.m. reception, 6:30 p.m. talk, 7:15 p.m. screening. $23. See here for more info. — Herrington

Flashback to 1976: Two Memphis boys, Mike Baker and Rusty Brown, are exploring Nonconnah Creek when they notice something strange sticking out of the sand. I don’t know whether to just accept Gunther as a third roommate (one who doesn’t pay rent) or to come up with some kind of contraption to get rid of him. But I’m not a scientist nor do I fool with ouija boards, so it looks like acceptance is the path I got to take. Of course, acceptance is the final stage of grief, and I don’t think Gunther has gotten past the first stage, denial, so that means I have a one-up on him. But getting drunk on self-righteousness and power is not a solution — you know what is, though? Alcohol, chemically speaking. Just ask the Blue Suede Sisters, who know a thing or two about the chemistry of a good time, something that I’m sure Gunther could use a dose of. Maybe a large enough dose will encourage him to move on to the party of a lifetime — or should I say the party of an afterlifetime.
This weekend, the drag nuns are hosting two sessions of their Cocktails & Chemistry soiree, where guests can purchase drinks from the cash bar and mingle with the Sisters before performing science experiments downstairs with Sister Kat Ion. Guests are encouraged to bring a lab partner or one will be assigned.

But, because of Allen, the student body of White Station High School decided to eliminate the titles of homecoming king and queen.
