While we love animals of all kinds at Lichterman Nature Center, pets are not allowed on the premises for the safety of the wildlife.

  • “All day long, coronaries, transplants!”: The brave of heart can interact with our human heart models, learn its parts and how it works, and get a closer look at a preserved pig heart.

July 28 – Jaws

Costumes encouraged: Beach Bum and 70’s

Activities:

  • “I’m not going to stand here and see that thing cut open.”: Learn about the anatomy and special adaptations of sharks by studying real preserved Dogfish Shark specimens.
  • “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”: Compare jaws from different sharks, learn to estimate their size from their teeth, and see how sharks never seem to run out of teeth.
  • “It wasn’t any coral reef!”: Take a look at some of the other things that make up a shark’s environment, from parasites to prey to habitats.

August 25 – Jumanji

Costumes encouraged: Adventurer and Animal

Activities:

  • “Need a hand? Well just you wait.”: Meet a tarantula, and take a closer look at some other spider specimens to learn why it’s best to avoid them.
  • “Well, a little rain never hurt anybody.”: Learn about different types of extreme weather, and why different climates experience different weather patterns.
  • “A tiny bite can make you itch, make you sneeze, make you twitch.”: Learn about mosquito anatomy, the diseases they carry, and the Yellow Fever outbreaks in Memphis.

September 16 – The Princess Bride

Costumes encouraged: Medieval and Pirate

Activities:

  • “Inconceivable!”: You knew it was coming. Test your wits against another player to see if you can determine which drink has been spiked with licorice, and in the meantime, learn about some common poisons, what they are, and how they affect your body.
  • “Have fun storming the castle!”: Learn about catapults, what they are and what they were used for, the physics that power them, and catapult some fish food into the lake just for good measure.
  • “My men are here, I am here, but soon you will not be here!”: Not everything on fire burns. Exploit chemistry to set a piece of paper on fire without burning it.

IN THE EVENT OF RAIN, THE MOVIE WILL BE MOVED INSIDE.
