STEAMFest 2022

Join the Museum and a host of community partners in celebrating all things STEAM (Science. Technology. Engineering. Arts. Mathematics.) at our 2nd Annual STEAMFest, October 22 at MoSH Central/Pink Palace.

See and learn about the importance of STEAM and the wide range of STEAM career paths from community partners. Hands-on activities, presentations, and demonstrations will inspire visitors to consider fascinating jobs, both current and on the horizon.

We’ll have a variety of fun activities including:

Pendulum Painting

Exploding Pumpkins

Balloon Zipline Races, and More!

Plus, you’ll get to interact with some of the animals from Lichterman Nature Center including our friendly opossum.

901FPV – Memphis Area Drones

See FPV (first person view) drones in action, including race, cinematic, long range, micro drones and more. Watch live drone races in Bodine Hall. Spectators can pick up a controller and fly a drone on a real drone simulator. See the ways STEAM relates to drones and hear about drone pilot jobs. Plus, see the 2022 MultiGP Drone Racing Championship streaming. Check out the drone footage!

Enjoy hands-on experiments and demonstrations of remarkable chemical phenomena.

Experiment with fabric properties, cloth dyeing, polymers and bubbles.

Learn about research projects conducted by the biology department including parasites of dogs in Memphis, ticks & their pathogens, and human genome adaptations to high elevations. See specimens of parasites found in the area and extract DNA from a strawberry.

Christian Brothers University Engineering Departments

Watch as the CBU Electrical Engineering Department flies a small drone inside the Museum hovering a few feet above the booth/station. Plus, see a model truss bridge, a student-designed water filtration system and more.

Join Memphis Fire Public Education Community Engagement and learn about residential home safety, children safety, seniors’ safety and fall prevention, holiday safety, fire and life safety. Come see the Fire Truck!

Lichterman Nature Center – The Wildlife Biology Experience

Dr. Dawn Manning, Chief Teacher/Naturalist, MoSH-Lichterman Nature Center

Become a wildlife biologist for the day with live animal encounters of various species! Experience the world of scales, scutes, feathers, exoskeletons, and fur with a wildlife biologist from Lichterman Nature Center.  Explore, study and touch a variety of wildlife pelts, shells, skulls and other natural artifacts found in the vast field of wildlife biology.  Test your knowledge by guessing the wildlife artifact in the touch box without using your sense of sight. Enjoy encounters with many live animal ambassadors from the nature center including the only marsupial native to North America and commonly found in backyards of the mid-south, the Virginia opossum with Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, American toad, and the state reptile of Tennessee, the Eastern Box Turtle, along for this wild ride!

Come build a simple robot while experiencing the flow of electricity with cubelets.

Come see a gravity well, and 3D displays and optical spatial filtering, and a laser security system.

Society of Women Engineers

See a demonstration of the principle behind the science of seeing inside the body using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Try your hand at computer and paper-based activities to identify human body parts on MRI images. Use microscopes to see cells and miniature creatures on biology slides. Build a small bridge out of popsicle sticks over a fake river or a 12” tower out of toothpicks and marshmallows. Learn the physics behind how catapults work by building a marshmallow catapult.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – October 19, 20 & 21 only.

See displays related to the various careers at St. Jude along with some hands-on items, including microscopes, centrifuge and more. Plus, giveaways for students.

 

University of Memphis Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research (CAESAR) – Water on Wheels (WOW)

The WOW Mobile takes visitors on a water journey, covering topics on the Memphis aquifer, water conservation, watershed science, the water cycle, and more! The program is tactile and engaging – great for learning but not for social distancing.

University of Memphis Department of Biological Sciences

Hands-on demonstrations related to biology for kids and families to interact with along with scientists to answer questions from festival participants.

University of Memphis Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – Optical Imaging Research Lab (OIRL)

Enjoy a host of activities focused on Light, Optics and Microscopy related to Tennessee science standards disciplinary core ideas of “Waves and their Application in Technologies for Information Transfer” and “Engineering Design”. These activities are related to the 3D displays, optical spatial filtering, autofluorescence phenomena, and a laser-security system.
